Capital on Tap business credit card: features, fees and alternatives
Published on: 22nd August 2026
Capital on Tap is one of the better-known business credit cards in the UK, 1% cashback on everything you spend, with no annual fee on the standard card.
If you're weighing it up, the things worth understanding are how the rewards actually pay out, what the £299 Pro tier buys you, the Preloading feature that most business credit cards don't offer, and whether your business will qualify. This guide covers each, then sets the card against the Funding Circle Cashback business credit card so you can see where the two differ.
All Capital on Tap product details below are taken from its business credit cards page and cashback page, correct as of August 2026. Rates, fees and terms can change and vary by circumstances, so it's worth confirming the latest details directly with Capital on Tap before applying.
What is the Capital on Tap business credit card?
It's a Visa business credit card from Capital on Tap.
You get a credit limit of up to £250,000, set on your circumstances, and you spend against it like any other business credit card.
Rates start from 13.86% APR (variable), and Capital on Tap states that clearing your balance in full each month means you pay no interest at all.
Alongside the card sit the things most card-first providers now offer: unlimited free employee cards with individual spend limits, virtual cards for online spending, no foreign exchange fees, accounting software syncing, and a mobile app.
How the rewards work
You earn 1 point for every £1 you spend, which works out at 1% cashback. There's no cap, no spending categories to track, and no introductory period to keep an eye on. Points become available as soon as a purchase clears.
Where Capital on Tap differs from a straight cashback card is what you can do with those points. You can:
Take them as cash into your business bank account
Use them to reduce your card balance
Convert them to Avios with The British Airways Club or Qatar Airways Privilege Club
Convert them to Virgin Points or Radisson Rewards
Spend them on gift cards from retailers including Amazon, John Lewis and Tesco
The trade-off is that it's a system you have to actively engage with, rather than cashback that simply lands.
How cashback and reward points are treated in your accounts depends on how your business is structured, and HMRC guidance differs by case. Speak to your accountant or a qualified tax adviser before you factor rewards into a budget.

How does Preloading work?
Preloading lets you top up your Capital on Tap card with your own money and spend that before you touch your credit limit. It still earns cashback at the standard rate.
The practical use is a purchase that exceeds your limit. Rather than applying for an increase, you fund the gap yourself. It's an unusual feature for a business credit card, and it effectively lets the card double as a prepaid facility when you want it to.
Who can apply
Capital on Tap asks that:
You're an active UK director, or a shareholder with 25% or more of the business
The business is registered as an Ltd, LLP or PLC, and listed as active on Companies House
There are no unsatisfied CCJs against you or the business in the last 12 months
The business isn't in an industry Capital on Tap classes as high risk
Sole traders aren't accepted, and nor are charities, trusts, funds, Royal Charters or dormant companies.
You'll need your personal details, the business's registered name, address and company number, your average monthly turnover, and bank details for settling the card. Capital on Tap says decisions take around 2 minutes, with virtual card access straight away and a physical card in 2 to 5 business days.
Does applying affect your credit score?
Capital on Tap runs a soft search on you personally, which doesn't affect your personal credit score, alongside a business credit check. I
Like most UK business credit cards, it requires a personal guarantee from a director. That means if the business can't pay, you're personally responsible for the debt, so card activity can affect your personal credit position if things go wrong. It's a binding commitment, and it's worth taking independent legal advice before signing one.
Used in the right way, a business credit card helps build a commercial credit history that lenders look at when you come to borrow. Used badly, the same mechanism works against you.
How it compares with the Funding Circle Cashback business credit card
| Capital on Tap | Funding Circle Cashback business credit card | |
|---|---|---|

| Cashback | 1% uncapped from day one. Pro earns 1.25% on preloaded spend | 2% for the first 6 months or up to £2,000, whichever comes first, then 1% uncapped |
| How rewards are paid | Points, redeemable as cash, balance reduction, gift cards or travel rewards | Cashback credited to your balance automatically each month |
| Interest-free period | No interest if you pay in full each month. | Up to 42 days interest-free credit as a grace period |
| Business types | Ltd, LLP or PLC | UK limited companies |
| Trading history | No minimum stated | At least 1 year |
| Turnover | [CONFIRM: not published on the pages used] | £30,000 or more a year |

| Accounting | Auto-sync, plus 6 months free Xero for first-time subscribers | Sage, Xero or FreeAgent |
There are three key differences worth noting:
The shape of the cashback: Both land on 1% uncapped long term. Funding Circle front-loads the first 6 months at 2%; Capital on Tap pays 1% from the first pound with nothing to expire. Which suits you depends on when your spending happens.
What you do with what you earn: Capital on Tap gives you points with several exits, including travel conversions. Funding Circle credits cashback to your balance automatically, with nothing to redeem or convert.
Eligibility: Capital on Tap takes LLPs and PLCs and sets no minimum trading period, but wants you to hold a business bank account. Funding Circle's card is for UK limited companies trading at least a year with turnover of £30,000 or more.
Fees, rates and features vary between providers and change over time. Check current terms on each provider's own site and compare them against your own numbers rather than a headline. Our guide to business credit card rates, fees and charges sets out what to look at.
Alternatives worth comparing
If travel points and tiered perks matter less to you than cashback landing in your account without any admin, the Funding Circle Cashback business credit card gives you best-in-business cashback with none of the usual fees.
2% cashback on all card purchases for your first 6 months or up to £2,000, whichever comes first, then 1% uncapped cashback on everything after that
Up to 42 days interest-free credit when you pay your balance in full, giving you room on your cash flow
No monthly fee, no annual fee, no foreign exchange fees
Free unlimited Company cards for your team, with individual spend limits you set
Credit limits up to £250,000, depending on your circumstances
Sync securely with Sage, Xero or FreeAgent, and manage every card from the Funding Circle app
There's no need to switch your business banking. Check your eligibility online in minutes and get an instant decision. Only limited companies can apply without affecting their credit score.
If the pressure point is a specific large bill rather than everyday spend, FlexiPay may suit you better. It lets you pay virtually any business cost upfront, by card or by transferring funds straight to a supplier, then spread it over 1 to 12 months for a flat fee from 1.99% per use, with no interest and no foreign exchange fees.
